Papal conclave, 1799–1800
The Conclave 1799/1800 was held on 1 December 1799 to 14 March 1800 Venice. It had become necessary because Pope Pius VI. died on August 29, 1799.
Background
1799, when Pius VI. had died in exile in Valence, French troops held under Napoleon Bonaparte occupied Rome and proclaimed the Roman Republic. Therefore, the conclave could take place only under the military protection of Austria in the Benedictine monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore on the homonymous island in Venice.
Course
Even before the conclave proclaimed Cardinal František de Paula Hrzán z Harasova the veto of the Emperor Francis II against the choice of the cardinals Carlo Bellisomi and Hyacinthe Sigismond Gerdil. After 103 Konklavetagen and a 204 -day Sedisvakanz finally Cardinal Luigi Barnaba Chiara Monti was elected Pope. He ascended the papal throne as Pius VII.
