The Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (Chinese中国 共产党 中央 政治局 常务委员会, Pinyin Zhōngguó Gòngchǎndǎng Zhongyang Zhèngzhìjú Changwu Wěiyuánhuì ) is a body whose membership varies between five and nine. This body is the top leadership of the Communist Party of China. The operation of this inner circle is not known. However, it is believed that the decisions are made by consensus.

History

Although the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China has existed since the beginning of the People's Republic of China, its influence varied widely. During the Cultural Revolution, he was practically disempowered.

When Deng Xiaoping came to power in 1978, it was one of his stated goals, the Party's power to be restored. This principle he also championed in the crackdown on student protests in 1989.

Although Jiang Zemin stepped down in 2002 to make the fourth generation of Chinese leaders under Hu Jintao the way, he still retained a strong influence, as six of the nine members of the 16th Standing Committee, Wu Bangguo, Jia Qinglin, Zeng Qinghong, Huang Ju ( † 2 June 2007), Li Changchun and possibly Wu Guanzheng are his proteges. Also at the 2007 party congress held Jiang was able to exert influence on the composition of the committee.
