Rende

Rende is a town in Calabria, 7 km east of Cosenza. It has 33 756 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) and an area of 54 km ².

The neighboring municipalities are Castiglione Cosentino, Castrolibero, Cosenza, Marano Marchesato, Marano Principato, Montalto Uffugo, Rose, San Fili, San Lucido, San Pietro in Guarano, San Vincenzo La Costa and Zumpano.

In the district Arcavacata is the Università della Calabria.

History

The city was founded in the 6th century BC. In the 11th century the Normans built on the highest point of a castle, which now houses the Town Hall.

Attractions

Among the notable churches include Santa Maria Maggiore, built in the early 16th century, and the baroque Chiesa del Rosario from the 17th century. Palazzo Zagarese from the 18th century, there is a folklore museum and an art gallery. Below Rende is located in a former convent of the Franciscans, whose rooms are now used by the university.
