Sant'Elpidio a Mare

Sant'Elpidio a Mare is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 16,998 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the Province of Fermo in the Marche. The community is located about 9 km north of Fermo and borders the province of Macerata. The Adriatic Sea is located 9 kilometers east of Sant'Elpidio a Mare.

Sant'Elpidio a Mare is the birthplace of Diego Della Valle and headquarters whose fashion company Tod's.

History

The settlement was originally called Cluana. When the municipality acquired the relics of St. Elpidius in the 7th century, it took the name of the saint. Due to a legend, said to have come to a holy phenomenon, whereby the place were preserved from being plundered by the Lombards.
