Setagaya, Tokyo

Setagaya (Japanese世 田 谷 区, -ku ) is one of the 23 wards of Tokyo, capital of Japan, and with over 800,000 inhabitants, is the most populous municipality in the prefecture of Tokyo.

Geography

Setagaya- ku is located in the south-west of Tokyo, just west of Shibuya and the Yamanote loop line. With 58.08 square kilometers, is the second largest district in terms of area of the 23 districts ( 9.35% of the 23 districts or 2.66% of the total area of ​​the Prefecture), with more than 892 573 residents of the most populous ( 9.84 % of the population of the 23 districts, 6.71 % of the total population of the prefecture ). The proportion of foreigners is 1.8%.

Setagaya- ku is one of the more expensive residential areas in Tokyo, it is close to the city center with the popular shopping and entertainment areas of Shibuya, Ebisu and Daikanyama. 60 % of the base are built up with residential buildings, most of Tokyo and Japan typically small single-family or apartment houses. Tallest building is the Carrot Tower (キャロット タワー, kyarotto tawa ) with 124 meters height. The administrative center of the district town hall is located in the same district Setagaya.

History

During the Edo period, a total of 42 villages were on the territory of today's Setagaya district. During the Meiji period, the central and eastern part was incorporated into the prefecture of Tokyo, while the rest became part of Kanagawa Prefecture in 1871. Something of 1893 more parts were incorporated into the prefecture of Tokyo. With the enlargement of the city of Tokyo in 1932 Setagaya was founded as a borough and took more mergers in 1936, its current proportions.

After the dissolution of the city of Tokyo in 1943 Setagaya was founded on March 15, 1947 in the establishment of 23 ( "Special " ) Districts in its present administrative structure.

For Mayor of Setagaya was elected shortly after the Great East Japan Earthquake, the former Social Democratic member of Parliament, and opponents of nuclear power Nobuto Hosaka in uniform regional elections in April 2011. The regular 50 -member municipal parliament is also selected with uniform regional elections.

For the Prefecture Parliament of the district forms an eight- mandate constituency. At the last regular election in 2013 the citizens of Setagaya elected three Liberal Democrats, two Kōmeitō candidates and one member each from JCP Seikatsusha Network and Minna no Tō into Parliament; the two candidates of the Democratic Party missed voting shares in the top eight. 2009 Setagaya had given three Democrats the three highest number of votes.

In elections for the lower house of the national parliament to Setagaya extends to their constituencies Tokyo 5 and 6, both selected in the past three elections each new MPs (DPJ → 2005 LDP → 2009 DPJ → 2012 LDP 2003 ) and are both represented since 2012 by Liberal Democrats.
