Slovakia in the Eurovision Song Contest

This article deals with the history of Slovakia as participants in the Euro Vision Song Contest.

Regularity of participation and success in competition

After Dismembration Czechoslovakia Slovakia undertook in 1993 a first attempt to participate. The group Elán failed with the song amnestia na neveru time but short of the Eastern European Trials in Ljubljana. Due to the 19th place in the debut in 1994, the country had then insert 1995, a forced break. In 1997 after the 18th place last year, and in 1999 after position 21, this happened. As of 2000, Slovakia adopted for financial reasons, not the Euro Vision Song Contest in 2009 and returned back to the competition. Since then, the country takes part again regularly, but always different from the semi-finals.

After the last place in the semifinals of the Euro Vision Song Contest 2012 in Baku with Max Jason May Slovakia abandoned for financial reasons to participate in Malmö in 2013. Same goes for 2014. Therefore Slovakia is one of the less successful countries of the Euro Vision family.

Languages

The first three appearances had to be sung according to the rules in Slovak, but also in 2009 and 2010 remained one. In the preliminary round also only songs were allowed to Slovak. 2011 twiins sang her I'm Still Alive for the first time in English, as well as Max Jason March 2012, the date last representative of the country. Tublatanka, Marcel Palonder, Kamil Mikulčík and Nela Pocisková and in 1993 retired group Elan took their posts on also in English versions.

Miscellaneous

  • All Slovak contributions to 2009 have not been selected internally by STV and in a preliminary round.
  • 1998 was the first tuning Croatia, there was Slovakia also equal to eight points. What initially was hoping for a good result, turned out to be a disappointment: It should be the only points of the evening.
  • In 1994, Slovakia will total 15 points, twelve of which came from Malta. Also in 1996 Slovakia received their highest rating of Malta, this time eight of a total of 19 points.
