Vieu-d'Izenave

Vieu - d'Izenave is a commune in the French department of Ain, in the Rhône -Alpes.

Geography

Vieu - d'Izenave is located on 642 m above sea level. Level, about 19 kilometers northeast of the city Ambérieu -en- Bugey (air line). The farming village extends in the central Bugey, in the midst of the broad valley of Combe du Val in the Jura, near the creek Borrey, at the eastern foot of the Chaîne de l' Avocat.

History

Is first mentioned Vieu - d'Izenave in 1185 under the name of De Vico. In the course of time, changed the spelling on Vicus d' Isinava (1250 ), Viu de Ysinava ( 1288), Vyu ( 1299 ), Vyeu ( 1313 ), Vic d' Ysenava (1350 ), Viou ( 1394), Viuz ( 1433 ) and Vieux d' Izenave ( until 1801 ) to the present Vieu - d'Izenave. The place name comes from the Latin word vicus ( village ).

The canon Ponce you Balmay Lyon gave his property in the Vallée de Meyriat in 1116 the Carthusian order to establish a monastery here.
