Westhalten

West Holding is a municipality with 974 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin in France. She is a member of the Communauté de communes de Pays Rouffach, Vignobles et Châteaux.

Geography

West holding situated in the center of the Vallée Noble on the edge of the Vosges Mountains, south of Colmar.

Neighboring municipalities are Pfaffenheim in the north, Rouffach in the east, Orschwihr in the south, the west and Soultzmatt Osenbach in the northwest. The municipality is part of the Regional Natural Park of Ballons des Vosges.

History

In a document of the year 1103 the name West haulda appears. Instead of the name West also the French name Ouest appear in documents. Keep originally means a heap.

1788 declared the inhabitants of West keeping their independence from the rule in Rouffach, 1818 West hold independent municipality.
