Worcestershire

Worcestershire [ wʊstəʃər ] is a county ( County) in the West Midlands region of England.

Worcestershire borders the counties of Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, West Midlands, Warwickshire and Gloucestershire.

To the west the county is bordered by the Malvern Hills. There, the former resort of Malvern is located ( where the sports car brand Morgan are produced ). The western part of the Hills are part of the county of Herefordshire.

The southern part of the county is bordered by Gloucestershire County and the northern edge of the Cotswolds. In the East lies Warwickshire. The largest rivers of the county are the Severn and the Avon.

Although located next to the city of Worcester a few other larger cities in the County, as Kidderminster and Bromsgrove are, the landscape is still dominated largely agrarian. In addition to the fruit growing hops here is drawn, its cultivation has declined since the Second World War.

The coat of arms of the city of Worcester shows three black pear-shaped fruit with it is a rare type of pear in the region: the Worcester Black Pear.

The area is also known for its porcelain manufacture and the famous Worcestershire sauce.

History

Worcestershire was known by the battle of Evesham, in which Simon V. de Montfort died on August 4, 1265, and later in the English Civil War through the struggle to Worcester ( 1651). Since the time of the Roman Empire, salt was extracted in the northern city of Droitwich Spa, led by one of the main Roman roads. In the county, is the oldest continuously published newspaper world, the Berrow 's Journal published (since 1690). Worcestershire was from 1974 to 1998 associated with the County of Herefordshire Hereford and Worcester. However, the region faces the county from 1998 no longer correspond to those from the period before 1974.
