Champniers-et-Reilhac

Champniers -et -Reilhac, Occitan Champs Nier e Relhac, is a commune with 501 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Dordogne in the Aquitaine region. It belongs to the district Nontron and Canton Bussière- Badil. It also forms part of the Périgord -Limousin Regional Natural Park.

Etymology

The place name derives from the Occitan Champniers Champs niers, French champs noirs from. This refers to black soils, that is, Soil of good quality. The place name or Relhac Reilhac probably derives from a Gallo-Roman personal names Regilius or Regulius.

Geography

The church today Champniers -et -Reilhac went out in 1806 from a merger of two previously independent municipalities Champniers and Reilhac, the new municipality was called at that time Reilhac -et- Champniers. It was not until 1847, the current spelling Champniers -et -Reilhac has been introduced. The two villages are almost 5 kilometers away from each other, Reilhac is located just off the main thoroughfare.

The community Champniers -et -Reilhac borders already on the department of Haute- Vienne, Reilhac is the northernmost town in the Dordogne.

By Champniers the north-south axis D 675 runs from Nontron to Saint -Mathieu. Champniers located 5 kilometers south of Saint -Mathieu and 21 kilometers north of Nontron. The secondary road D 117 establishes an eastern cross-connect in the direction of Cussac, D 110 leads west to the hamlet Reilhac and then on to Maisonnais -sur- Tardoire.

Champniers -et -Reilhac is surrounded by the following municipalities:

  • Maisonnais -sur- Tardoire (Haute -Vienne ) in the north- west and north
  • Saint -Mathieu (Haute -Vienne ) in the northeast
  • Saint- Barthélemy -de- Bussière in southeastern
  • Piégut -Pluviers the south and southwest and
  • Bussière- Badil in the West

The southwest of the municipality is the Trieux, a left tributary of the Tardoire, drained. At the westernmost point of the municipality of Nauzon, a small right tributary of the Trieux, who is also the border river to the department of Haute- Vienne flows. In the southwest are also two smaller reservoirs, the L' Etang des Petits Moulins and the L' Etang Grolhier - the latter is an important bird sanctuary.

General drainage direction is to the west.

The topographically lowest point of the municipality is located 185 meters above sea level at the confluence of Trieux and Nauzon in the far west. The highest point at 360 meters above sea level is located at the extreme eastern point of the community. This reflects the generally wound scholl -like dip of the countryside contrary to the west.

Geology

The territory of Champniers -et -Reilhac is completely underlain by Variscan basement rocks of the north-western Massif Central. In the main, this is the Saint -Mathieu- leucogranite, with its fine-grained and coarse-grained facies of his. In the southwest is just the Piégut -Pluviers granodiorite open. In the transition region of the two granitoid lenses are also interposed by migmatitischem paragneiss.

History

Reilhac has a Romanesque church from the 11th century, in Champniers also stands a Romanesque church from the 12th century. From the former castle in Champniers the square donjon is still preserved.
