Geology

Saint- Jory- de -Chalais is completely on the metamorphic basement rocks of the north-western Massif Central. The community has a share in two ceiling units: along the western border of mica schists of mica slate Parautochthonen unit and the rest area on rocks of the structurally higher-lying Lower Gneiss ceiling, mainly mica schist, paragneiss, and orthogneiss Leptynite. The at La Croix in the south pending, northeast trending mica schist are the Roche Noire massif in Saint- Paul-la -Roche very similar - they also lead to an oceanic crustal remnants eingeschuppte amphibolite ( epidote - containing) and eclogites. About the mica schists follow medium -grained Leptynite that are likely to have resulted from Ordovician granites. Just south of Comboux included a mile-long, north-east facing Peridotitkörper ( serpentine). About the Leptyniten are paragneiss, the output of Neoproterozoic rocks are greywacke, followed eventually by the Cambrian orthogneisses of the Dronne arc. The paragneiss contain at Vauriac a larger Pegmatitkörper, which also follows the north-east direction. The orthogneisses have emerged from Leukograniten and can also be configured as Leptynite or as eye gneisses. In Les reef they are penetrated along a fault of a North - trending Lamprophyrgang.

The place during the Devonian, mid-to high-grade regional metamorphism reached generally the staurolite - Isograd, sometimes also the kyanite - Isograd (especially in the north of the Lower Gneiss ceiling).

Altitudes between the rivers are mostly obscured by colluvial Hüllsedimenten of the Tertiary period, usually sands and clays. About this usually rearranged colluvium is located in the south-east a very extensive alluvial river tongue ( river gravel ) from the Pliocene and Pleistocene.
