Lanouaille

Lanouaille is a commune with 989 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Dordogne in the Aquitaine region. It belongs to the district Nontron, is the capital of the canton of Lanouaille and member of the Association of Local Authorities Pays de Lanouaille.

Geography

The municipal area in the east of the Périgord Vert extends over the plateau between the upper Loue, which forms the western boundary of the parish, and the Valley of Auvézère, about 40 kilometers north-east of Périgueux and 50 kilometers south of Limoges.

Lanouaille is surrounded by the following municipalities:

  • Angoisse in the North
  • Savignac- Lédrier in the southeast
  • Génis and Anlhiac in the south
  • Preyssac -d'Excideuil ( point of contact ) and Saint- Médard- d'Excideuil in the southwest
  • Dussac in the West
  • Sarlande in the northwest

Etymology

The name Lanouaille is a derivative of La Nouvelle meaning " the new (city) ".

History

In 1801 was Lanouaille capital of the canton, whereas before it was the neighboring Dussac. In 1944 the city suffered reprisals by the 2nd SS Panzer Division "Das Reich " on their way to Normandy.
