Saint-Sulpice-de-Mareuil

The French town of Saint -Sulpice- de -Mareuil, Occitan Sent Soplesí de Maruelh, located in the northwest of the department of Dordogne in the Aquitaine region. It has 125 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) and is one of 14 municipalities of the canton of Mareuil. Your municipality also forms an integral part of the Périgord -Limousin Regional Natural Park.

Etymology

Saint- Sulpice, Occitan Sent Soplesí ( s ), is derived from the Holy Sulpicius ( Sanctus Sulpicius ).

Geography

Saint- Sulpice- de -Mareuil is located four kilometers east-northeast of Mareuil and 14 km west-southwest of Nontron away (air line). The community is surrounded by the following neighboring communities:

  • Rudeau - Ladosse in the North
  • Champeaux -et -la- Chapelle- Pommier in the East
  • Vieux -Mareuil in the south
  • Mareuil in the southwest and
  • Puyrenier in the West.

The northern boundary of the municipality to Rudeau - Ladosse is formed by the flowing westward Nizonne. Left side arms of the Nizonne are a small valley that opens out to the south of Rudeau in the Nizonne. It rises on the southeast border at Le Genet and falls seasonally dry. Furthermore, a smaller tributary rises south from the town center and opens shortly before the mill, Le Moulin de Connezac in the Nizonne. The topographically lowest point in the municipality of Saint- Sulpice- de -Mareuil is located 115 meters above the sea on the Nizonne at Champellat (municipality Puyrenier ) on the north -west corner, the highest point at 225 meters, is located south of the situation on the southern border to Vieux -Mareuil. Geology

History

The oldest preserved building in Saint- Sulpice- de -Mareuil is the Romanesque parish church built in the 12th century. The Château de la Vergne castle was built in the 15th century. The Château de la Faye goes back to the 16th century.

Demographics

Source: INSEE population figures in Saint- Sulpice- de -Mareuil were up sharply in 2004, but since then recover somewhat. The loss of population was more pronounced than in the rest of the canton Mareuil.
