Sainte-Croix-de-Mareuil

The French town of Sainte -Croix -de- Mareuil ( Occitan Senta Crotz de Maruelh ) is in the northwest of the department of Dordogne in the Aquitaine region and has 139 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011). The municipal area is integrated into the Périgord -Limousin Regional Natural Park.

Geography

Sainte -Croix -de- Mareuil is located just southwest of the D 939 from Perigueux to Angouleme, about three kilometers north- west of Mareuil and six kilometers southeast of La Rochebeaucourt.

Sainte -Croix -de- Mareuil is surrounded by the following neighboring communities:

  • Gout - Rossignol in the south and southwest

The municipal area includes the following castles, hamlets and farmhouses: Beauchaud, Château d' Ambelle, La Borie, La Chabroulie, La Chatrie, La Durantie, La Forêt, La Grande Cote, La Neuillie, La Vielle Cote, L' Echandeuil, Le Sablon, Les Bregnes, Les Forgerons, Les Petits Essards, Les Plaines, Montplaisir, Teillet, Tuillière and Verdinas.

The municipality is crossed by the Belle, a left tributary of the Lizonne, in southeast-northwest direction. The extreme northern border is formed by the Nizonne.

The topographically lowest spot with 95 meters above sea level is located in the north-west, at the confluence of the Belle with the coming of the East Nizonne. The highest point at 194 meters, is located in the immediate vicinity of the hamlet of La Durantie in the extreme southeast of the municipal territory. The community is located between two northwest-southeast trending ridge, centering in the southwest ridge of far greater extent is quite flat and falls to the northeast toward the Belle.

Geology

Sainte -Croix -de- Mareuil Mareuil located in the heart of the anticline. The disrupted layer sequence of the northeastern Aquitaine basin extends from the Kimmeridgian up to and including the Upper Santoniums. In the Pleistocene colluvial altérité were in the northeast of the municipality on the Cretaceous sediments deposited, consisting primarily of sands and gravels, which have emerged from the sandy upper Santonian. Another noteworthy aspect is the discernible layer stage of Turoniums ( Angoumien ); they surrounded the semi-circular light structural state bulging of the anticline with its Cenomanian and Kimmeridgian. The Turonian is mined commercially in a large quarry near Verdinas of the company CMP. The extremely pure lime is used as granules, aggregates in the photo papermaking and as limestone slabs for the construction industry.

History

The oldest surviving structure in Sainte -Croix -de- Mareuil is undoubtedly the Romanesque church.
