Saint-Saud-Lacoussière

Saint- Saud- Lacoussière ( Occitan Sensaut e la Cossiera ) is a commune with 866 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the north of the Dordogne in the Aquitaine region. It belongs to the district Nontron and the canton of Saint- Pardoux- la -Rivière. It also forms part of the Périgord -Limousin Regional Natural Park.

Etymology

The origin of the Occitan Sensaut is not fully understood. The second syllable of the word saut means a wooded slope or a sunken road (literally jump). La cossiera is a variant of la corsiera with the meaning channel or ditch.

Geography

Saint- Saud- Lacoussière is located halfway between Nontron and La Coquille. The distance to the west-facing Nontron is twelve kilometers to the east, from La Coquille also twelve kilometers (direct distance ).

The municipal area is approximately centrally crossed by the River Dronne. The meandering river has up to 100 meters deep into the bedrock, creating a gorge-like valley. Geology

History

In 1163 the Cistercians founded an abbey in Peyrouse, which was one of the four Cistercian abbeys in the Périgord. Whether the hamlet Vieille Abbaye relate to such activity, is not clear. The Romanesque village church of Saint- Saud- Lacoussière was also built in the 12th century. It includes wooden statues from the former Cistercian abbey.
