La Thuile, Aosta Valley

La Thuile is a town in the autonomous region of Aosta Valley. The municipality has 791 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012), is located at an average altitude of 1450 m slm and has a size of 125 km ². The inhabitants are called Thuileins.

La Thuile consists of the districts Buic, Thovex, Moulin, Villaret, Bathieu, Entrèves, Petite Golette, Grande Golette, Pont Serrand, Arly, Les Granges, La Joux, Pierre- carrée, Preyllon, Les Suches, Petit -Saint -Bernard, Petosan, Faubourg and Preylet. The neighboring communities are called Arvier, Avise, Bourg -Saint- Maurice ( France), Courmayeur, La Salle, Montvalezan (France), Morgex, Pré -Saint- Didier, Sainte -Foy -Tarentaise (France), Seez (France) and Valgrisenche.

La Thuile is situated along the historically important street of the Little St. Bernard Pass between the Mont Blanc Massif and the French Tarentaise. The appearance of La Thuile is shaped by the glaciers of the Rutor, which are the most powerful waterfalls in the Alps. Following the cases, one can reach the refuge Rifugio Alberto Deffeyes within 2:30.

The parish church of St. Nicholas was already mentioned in papal documents of the 12th century.

During the Fascist period the place was from 1939 the name Porta Littoria and was renamed again in 1946.
