1998 Masters (snooker)

The Benson & Hedges Masters 1998 was a snooker invitation tournament of the season 1997/98, which was held in London from 1 to 8 February 1998 at the Wembley Conference Centre. It was the 24th edition of the Masters.

23 years after the finale of the first master between Ray Reardon and John Spencer the final of the Masters was decided by a re -spotted Black again. Mark Williams won against Stephen Hendry and won for the first time the Masters.

Defending champion Steve Davis lost in the semifinal against Williams.

In the wild card round Darren Morgan Andy Hicks defeated 5-4. Hicks was played by the highest break of the tournament with 142 points and won so despite the defeat in his first round of a prize of £ 16,000 for the highest break. Previously, he had already won the Benson & Hedges Championship and thus qualified for the Masters. Stephen Lee won the second wildcard round game 5-1 against Jimmy White.
