Snooker season 1997/1998

The snooker season 1997/1998 consisted of 16 professional snooker tournaments, of which 8 were included in the rating for the world rankings.

As in the previous year, the season began in the Far East, this time very early on 14 August 1997 in China with the newly Riley Superstar Championship. The Dubai Classics that were changed in the last two years to Thailand, returned this year as the China Open and again lost its status as a world ranking tournament. Another ranking tournament, the European Open, was canceled after nine years and returned later back again. Also the only team tournament, the World Cup, was finally set after its revival in the previous year.

The season ended with the World Cup final on 4 May 1998, which saw John Higgins as world champion for the first time. Higgins was in 8 of the 16 season finale and won four titles, including three in world rankings tournaments. Accordingly, he moved the following season 1998/99 on the world ranking number one.
