Snooker season 1996/1997

In the snooker season 1996/1997 17 snooker professional tournaments were played: ten world ranking tournaments and seven invitational tournaments.

For the first time began a snooker season in Asia, this time on 9 September 1996 with the Asian Classic, as the Thailand Classic last year called themselves now. In addition, an attempt was made to revive the World Cup as a team tournament after six -year break. It was the last time that this tournament was held.

The season ended with the World Cup final on May 5, 1997, for the first time ever won an Irishman Ken Doherty. He thus ended the series by Stephen Hendry, who won five world titles before. The Scottish world number one was but with five titles and two finals by far the most successful player of the season.
