The 8th stage of the 2008 Tour de France on July 12 was 172.5 km long and ran from Figeac to Toulouse. There were three intermediate sprints and two climbs of the fourth category and the third category two climbs on the program.

The stage began similarly uneasy with unsuccessful breakaways as the day before. First tried seven drivers to settle, later a triad consisting of David de la Fuente, Simon Gerrans and Egoi Martínez. The first mountain stage, which was already nine kilometers after the start, won de la Fuente. After the three were caught, tried first ten, then eleven other driver to settle. All breakaways were thwarted by the Columbia team who defended the yellow jersey. Laurent Lefèvre, who won the second mountain stage, was the first who was able to successfully transmit at kilometer 35. The prosecution took Amets Txurruka, Christophe Jérôme Pineau Riblon and on. Lefèvre could reach a maximum lead of 5:15 minutes before he was waiting for his pursuers and put them together to extend our lead, which decreased slightly in the meantime, back to 5:25 min. Lefèvre also won the last two climbs and the first and third sprint. Later, the distance shrank back and other drivers will try to catch up with the quartet. Txurruka and Pineau finally sat down somewhat, Lefèvre and Riblon were swallowed by the field.

About three kilometers from the finish, the last two outliers are obtained, so that it came to a sprint finish again. The goal in Toulouse was achieved on a 420 meters long and eight meters wide stretch. There, Mark Cavendish, who celebrated his second stage win of this tour.
