2009 Table Tennis European Championships

The 28th Table Tennis Championship ( officially: LIEBHERR European Table Tennis Championships 2009, in German LIEBHERR European Championships 2009) was held in Stuttgart from 13 to 20 September 2009. As venues for the Porsche Arena and Hanns -Martin- Schleyer-Halle were selected. The Porsche Arena was the main venue with a capacity of about 6,000 spectators.

Germany won three gold medals: in the women's singles Wu Jiaduo won her gold medal in the men's doubles defended Timo Boll / Christian Suss their title, also the men's team became European Champion.

Award of the venue

On July 20, 2008, the Bureau of the German Table Tennis Association in a conference, the European Championships in Stuttgart decided to forgive. Apart from Stuttgart to Bremen also had advertised with the town hall of Bremen as a venue. As in previous years, events such as Euro 2000, World Cup 2006 and the German Open took place almost exclusively in northern and eastern Germany, it was decided against Bremen and Stuttgart. Last Stuttgart in 1992 was the venue for the European Championship.

The German ladies came in fifth place at the European Championships. The team won in the placement match against Belarus 3-1. Were used, Wu Jiaduo Zhenqi Barthel, Kristin Silver iron, Petrissa Solja and Laura Matzke.

In the group stage the team reached through victories over Italy and Turkey, and a defeat against the Netherlands place. Thus, it was justified for the games to accommodate 1 to 8, which were held in a knockout system. After the 1-3 defeat against Poland won in the round for the places 5-8 against France 3-1. Then it lost the match for 5th place against Belarus 3-1.

The German women's team achieved the following results:

  • Laura Matzke: victory against Magdalena Szczerkowska (Poland), losing to Anna Tikhomirova (Russia)
  • Petrissa Solja: In the main round she defeated Irina Kotikhina (Russia). Then they won the consolation round against Solichero Carmen (Spain ), Dora Madarasz (Hungary ), Fulya Ozler (Turkey) and Meral Ildiz Ali (Turkey).
  • Zhenqi Barthel: Victory against Jana Tomazini (Slovenia ), Tessy Gonderinger ( Luxembourg ), losing to Marharyta Pessozka (Ukraine )
  • Kathrin Mühlbach: defeat in the main round against Renáta Štrbíková (Czech Republic ) victory in the consolation round of Maria Christoforaki (Greece ), Therese Andersen ( Norway) and losing to Elena Mocrousov (Moldova )

The German team was in the group matches against France, Denmark and Spain. Thus, it was qualified for the round of eight, which was played in KO system. After victories over Sweden ( 3-1 ), Romania ( 3-0) and Denmark ( 3-2 ), it was European champion.

The Germans Timo Boll and Christian Suss could defend their title successfully. They won 4-2 against Wang Zeng Yi and the duo Lucjan Blaszczyk from Poland.

For the first time Mixed European Championships were held in a separate tournament. They found from September 3 to September 5 in Subotica (Serbia ) instead.

The winners Aleksandar Karakasevic / Rūta Paškauskienė (Serbia / Lithuania) before Evgueni Shetinin / Wiktoryja Paulitch ( Belarus ). German did not participate.

  • Alina Sandul from Moldova was eleven years old (born 16 October 1997), the youngest participant.
