Al LeConey

Al LeConey (actually: Jeremiah Alfred LeConey; born November 3, 1901 in Moorestown, New Jersey, † November 11, 1959 in Plainfield, New Jersey) was an American sprinter and Olympic gold medalist.

LeConey won the 1922 AAU championships over 220 yards and a student from Lafayette College the IC4A Championships over 100y and 220 y, just over 200 meters at the U.S. Track and Field Championships. At the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924 he won the gold medal in the 4 x 100 - meter relay with a world record time of 41.0 s, along with his team-mates Loren Murchison, Louis Clarke and Frank Hussey, ahead of the teams from the UK ( silver) and the Netherlands ( bronze).

After the Olympics LeConey ran the 100y in a time of 9.4 seconds. However, this was denied him, as the referee came to the conclusion that he had had too much tailwind for this run. 1932 brought the U.S. Post Office in his honor a stamp with his portrait out.
