Asher Hinds

Asher Crosby Hinds ( born February 6, 1863 in Benton, Kennebec County, Maine; † May 1, 1919 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician. Between 1911 and 1917 he represented the state of Maine in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Asher Hinds attended the common schools and the Coburn Classical Institute. Then he studied until 1883 at Colby College in Waterville. Since 1884 he worked in Portland in the newspaper business. In the years 1889-1891 he worked for the then Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Thomas Brackett Reed. Between 1895 and 1911 Hinds remained in the administration of the House of Representatives.

Politically, Hinds member of the Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1910, he was elected in the first district of Maine in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington. There he met on March 4, 1911 is the successor of the deceased in the meantime Amos L. Allen. After two elections Hinds was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1917 three legislative periods. At this time there were the 16th and the 17th Amendment, discussed and adopted.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Asher Hinds was living in Washington. There he died on 1 May 1919. He was then buried in Portland.
