Basicò

Basicò is a small municipality in the province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, with 648 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Basicò located 70 km west of Messina in Ostnebrodischen Mountains. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture (wine and cereals) and animal husbandry.

The neighboring municipalities are Montalbano Elicona and Tripi.

History

Basicò and the area around Basicò was settled very early. So there necropolis around the village. In the Middle Ages it was the monastery of Santa Maria di Basicò, it is no longer available. Until 1862 it was known as Casal Nuovo.

Attractions

The castle of the barons of the 16th century has two featured portals. The Monastery of the Patri Basiliani from the 18th century has two crypts from the 13th century. The San Biagio church dates from the 16th century. The parish church dating from 1600 is dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi.
