Benningen

Benningen is a municipality in the Swabian district of Lower Allgäu region and a member of the administrative community Memmingerberg. The place is known mainly because of the Benninger Ried, the world's single occurrence of Elke Ried.

Geography

Benningen is right on the city limits of Memmingen in the Danube -Iller region in Upper Swabia.

The municipality consists of the district Benningen and a part of the district Hawangen (the other part of the district forms the municipality Hawangen ). The municipality Benningen include the places Benningen and Benninger wasteland.

History

Benningen, for the first time in 1152 in a document called, but mentioned in a chronicle 961, belonged to the Empire pin Ottobeuren. In 1218 the Ried chapel was built, which is next to the very shrunken Benninger Ried one of the sights of the community. Since the Imperial Diet of 1803 the place belonged to Bavaria.
