Bungo Province

Bungo (Japanese豊 后 国, Bungo no kuni ) is a former province of Japan, which was adjacent to the provinces of Buzen, Hyūga, Higo and Chikugo. Today the field of Oita Prefecture corresponds.

History

The province was created in the late 7th century from the splitting of the province of Toyo in Buzen provinces (Eng. "Front - Toyo " ) and Bungo (Eng. "Behind - Toyo "). The characters of the province were read in the early days as Toyo - kuni no michi no shiri.

During the Sengoku period Bungo was considered the headquarters of the Ōtomo clan.

It is believed that the capital (国 府, Kokufu ) of Bungo in today's district Furugō (古国 府) from Oita lay, which translates to " old provincial capital " means. To date, however, it could be found no archaeological evidence.

The country Bungo plays a role in the first encounter between Japan and Europe. The first Portuguese, who came to the coast of Japan, landed on the coast of Bungo and had contact with the princes of Bungo, however they thought was the ruler of Japan.
