Chikuzen Province

The province was created in the late 7th century by splitting the old province of Tsukushi (筑紫 国) in the provinces Chikuzen ( " front Tsukushi " ) and Chikugo ( "Behind - Tsukushi ").

In the 7th century here the Dazaifu was established, which was not only the provincial capital ( Kokufu ), but a military special administrative region, whose term of office on board all the provinces of Kyushu. It was located near the present town of Dazaifu. However Fukuoka became more important in the modern era.

At the end of the 13th century, an invading army of the Mongols landed in Chikuzen. The main force was destroyed by a typhoon ( kamikaze ).
