Hitachi Province

Hitachi (Japanese常 陆 国, Hitachi no kuni ) was an old province of Japan. Bordered on provinces Iwashiro, Iwaki, Shimo -Usa and Shimotsuke. Today, the area is the Ibaraki Prefecture.

The old provincial capital ( Kokufu ) and the official provincial temples were near modern Ishioka and have been excavated. The main shrine ( Ichinomiya ) was further east at Kashima.

In the 8th century, it was with 217,000 inhabitants, is the most populous province of Japan.

In the Sengoku period, the province was divided among several daimyo, the main castle town was, however, usually in the modern city of Mito.
