Since the late Heian period (12th century), the province of the Itsukushima Shrine was known. Taira no Kiyomori donated a new building complex and Sutrenrollen.

Itsukushima ( Miyajima ) had a good seaport and strategic importance.

In the Sengoku period, the city the seat of the Mōri clan was until 1600. 1555 won the Battle of Itsukushima Mōri Motonari against Sue Harutaka and established his power in the western part of Honshu.

Mōri Terumoto, one of the members of the Council of the Five regent, the Toyotomi Hideyoshi appointed for his son, stood before the Battle of Sekigahara on the side of Ishida Mitsunari and lost Aki and many other dominions.

After a brief reign of Fukushima Masanori 1619 Nagaakira Asano was appointed as the daimyo of Hiroshima - with an income of 420,000 koku of rice. Until the Meiji Restoration, the Asano ruled almost the whole province.

The dominion of the daimyo was renamed in 1871 in Hiroshima Prefecture, from which, after some regrouping today's prefecture was established.
