Hizen Province

Hizen (Japanese肥 前 国, Hizen no kuni ) was an old province of Japan. Bordered on Chikugo provinces and Chikuzen. Today, the area is divided between the Prefecture Saga Prefecture and Nagasaki, Nagasaki also received added regions of the province of Tsushima and Iki Province.

The province was created from the splitting of the province of Hi in the provinces of Hizen ( " front - Hi" ) and Higo ( "Behind -Hi "). Higo was mentioned here for the first time for the year in Shoku Nihongi 696.

The old provincial capital ( Kokufu ) was near the city of Yamato, Saga. Toyotomi Hideyoshi commanded the invasion of Korea from the city of Nagoya in Hizen. The Shimabara Rebellion took place here. In the Sengoku period, the region was divided among many daimyo, the richest of them had their strongholds in the saga.
