Nagato Province

Nagato (长 门 国Japanese Nagato no kuni ), often Chōshū (长 州) called, was an old province of Japan. She lay in the far west of the island of Honshu - on the territory of the present Yamaguchi Prefecture. Nagato bordered on Iwami the province and the province of Suo.

The old capital of the province ( Kokufu ) was located in present-day district Chōfu ( a contraction of the words Chōshū and Kokufu ) of Shimonoseki. However, this was later located in the province of Daimyat Chōshū sat in Hagi. Nagato was ruled before and after the Battle of Sekigahara from the Mōri.

1871, with the abolition of feudalism in Japan and the establishment of prefectures by the Meiji Restoration, the provinces of Nagato and Suo were merged to today's Yamaguchi Prefecture.

The Meiji oligarchy that of 1868 came to power with the Meiji Restoration had numerous representatives from the province as Ito Hirobumi, Yamagata Aritomo, Kido Koin, ( probably Katsura Kogoro ), besides also Yoshida Shoin, Takasugi Shinsaku and Kusaka Genzui.
