Buzen Province

Buzen (Japanese豊 前 国, Buzen no kuni ) was an old province of Japan in the north of the island of Kyushu. Bordered on Bungo provinces and Chikuzen. Today, the area of the eastern part of Fukuoka Prefecture, including some northern districts of Oita Prefecture.

History

The province was created in the late 7th century from the splitting of the province of Toyo in Buzen provinces (Eng. "Front - Toyo " ) and Bungo (Eng. "Behind - Toyo "). The characters of the province were read in the early days as Toyo - kuni no michi no kuchi.

The ruins of the old provincial capital ( Kokufu ) were in the city Toyotsu (today: Miyako ) found. The castle town of Kokura (now Kitakyushu ), a seat of numerous feudal lords, also lay in Buzen.

After the abolition of the feudal system during the Meiji Restoration in 1871 the province was for 4 years to Kokura Prefecture until it was 1876, the Fukuoka Prefecture slammed.
