Iwase Province

Iwase (Jap.石 背 国, Iwase no kuni ) was a short-lived Province of Japan during the Nara period. It corresponds to the central and western part of present-day Fukushima Prefecture.

History

The province was created in collaboration with the province of Iwaki in the 5th month 718 as the separation of the province of Michinoku ( Mutsu ). Between 722 and 724 the 3rd month, she was again struck the province of Michinoku.

Analogous to the province of Yamashiro (山 背 国), it is assumed that in the 7th century the kanji背not as usual se, but was pronounced shiro.

1868, the province Iwashiro was established, which included approximately the same area and whose name, if written with other kanji, is derived from the suspected province Iwase.

Structure

The province was divided into 5 districts ( kori ):

  • Aizu (会 津 郡, Aizu no kori )
  • Asaka (安 积 郡, Asaka no kori )
  • Iwase (石 背 郡, Iwase no kori )
  • Shirakawa (白河 郡, Shirakawa no kori )
