Bingo Province

Bingo (Japanese备 后 国, bingo no kuni ) was an old province of Japan on facing West Honshu and the Inland Sea. Today, it is the eastern part of Hiroshima prefecture. Bingo bordered by the provinces of Bitchū, Hoki, Izumo, Iwami and Aki.

The province was created in the second half of the 7th century by splitting the old province of Kibi (吉 备 国) in the provinces of Bizen ( " front - Kibi " ), Bitchū ( " Central Kibi " ) and Bingo ( "Behind - Kibi " ). The characters of the province were read in the early days as Kibi no michi no shiri.

The old provincial capital ( Kokufu ) is suspected in the area of the present town Fuchū ( which is also a name for the capital ) in Hiroshima. During the Sengoku period bingo was part of the domains of the Mōri clan.

After the Battle of Sekigahara, Tokugawa Ieyasu awarded the province to one of his allies.
