Higo Province

Higo (Japanese肥 后 国, Higo no kuni ) was a province of Japan in the area of today's Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyūshū. Higo bordered on Chikugo, Bungo, Hyūga, Ōsumi and Satsuma.

The province was created from the splitting of the province of Hi in the provinces of Hizen ( " front - Hi" ) and Higo ( "Behind -Hi "). For the first time Higo was mentioned by 696 Shoku Nihongi in.

The provincial capitals ( Kokufu ) of Higo were doing well in today's Kumamoto. During the Muromachi period Higo from the Kikuchi clan was held. However, this was expropriated in the Sengoku period, and the province was occupied by the rulers of the neighboring areas, such as the Shimazu from the province of Satsuma. Finally, Toyotomi Hideyoshi attacked the island of Kyushu, leaving Higo his followers Sasa Narimasa and later Kato Kiyomasu.

In the Sengoku period Higo was an important center of Christianity in Japan. There is also the samurai Miyamoto Musashi held on the invitation of the daimyo, while he completed his Book of Five Rings.
