Canelli

Canelli ( piemont.: Canèj ) is a municipality with 10,580 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the Italian province of Asti (AT ), Region Piedmont. Patron saint of the place is the Apostle Thomas.

Geography

The village lies at an altitude of 157 m on the bank of mountain river Belbo ( Tanaro river system / Po ), between the hills of Asti and the Langhe. The municipality covers an area of ​​23 km ².

Neighboring municipalities are Bubbio Calamandrana, Calosso, Cassinasco, Loazzolo, Moasca, San Marzano Oliveto and Santo Stefano Belbo.

Economy

Canelli is home to many wineries as well as large business houses that produce the sparkling wine Asti Spumante. In Canelli are also vines for the Dolcetto d' Asti, a grown red wine with DOC status. The berries of the grape varieties Pinot Noir and / or Chardonnay may be processed for sparkling wine Alta Langa. The Muscat grape for the Asti Spumante, a sweet DOCG sparkling wine with a low alcohol content and for still wine Moscato d' Asti is also grown here. In Canelli also vines of Barbera for the Barbera d'Asti, a DOCG red wine are grown with status.

Culture

Every year on the third weekend in June, the population still plays a war episode from 1613. At the time, Spanish troops of the Habsburgs had laid a siege to the city, but could be marketed successfully.
