Ballarat is located about 120 km west of the capital, Melbourne in the center of Victoria and includes the following towns a: Coghill's Creek, Ascot, Learmonth, Miners Rest, Burrumbeet, Cardigan, Ballarat, Nerrina, Mount Clear, Mount Helen, Wendouree, Alfredton, Delacombe, Brown Hill, Sebastopol and Buninyong. The seat of the City Council is located in the town of Ballarat in the middle of the LGA with about 86,000 inhabitants.

Ballarat is the third largest city in Victoria and one of the largest inland cities in Australia. It owes its size to the one the gold rush end of the 19th century, on the other hand its convenient location to the city of Melbourne. In addition to the industry in the city there are also some agriculture in the surrounding areas, especially cereal cultivation and animal husbandry.

The gold rush past makes the area around Ballarat has become a popular tourist destination, more than a quarter of all the gold discoveries in Victoria came from here. In Buninyong, where in 1851 the first gold was discovered, and other places there are specially restored gold mining settlements and mining facilities to visit.
