Cardinia is part of the Outer Metropolitan Area of Melbourne, the outer metropolitan area of the capital Victoria. The area is 1280 km ² and has about 74,000 inhabitants.

Cardinia is located 47-83 km from the city center at the southeast end of Melbourne at Western Port Bay and includes 21 neighborhoods and towns: Beaconsfield, Beaconsfield Upper, Beenak, Bunyip, Cardinia, Clematis, Cockatoo, Cory Lynn, Dewhurst, Emerald, Garfield, Gembrook, Koo Wee Rup, Lang Lang, Maryknoll, Nar Nar Goon, Officer, Pakenham, Rythdale, Tonimbuk and Tynong. The seat of the City Council is located in Pakenham.

Cardinia is the transition region between the members of the Greater Metropolitan Area neighborhoods and rural suburbs of the city. It belongs to the agricultural regions affected, in addition to fruit and vegetables, especially livestock is operated here. The area around Koo Wee Rup and Lang Lang is a center of asparagus production.

Due to the north of the Shire of Gembrook Cockatoo on, Lakeside and Emerald leads the historic railroad line of the Puffing Billy steam locomotive, the last preserved as a tourist attraction of formerly four railway lines that connected the rural areas to the city center of Melbourne network. The 24 km route begins in Belgrave in the Yarra Ranges.

The Cardinia Shire Council has seven members who are elected by the residents of the four Wards ( three Councillor from the Central, two of rank, and one each from Bunyip Ward and port ).
