Alpine Shire

Alpine is located in the northeast of Victoria about 350 km northeast of the capital, Melbourne and includes the following towns a: Myrtleford, Mount Buffalo, Bright, Mount Beauty, Harrietville, Falls Creek and Hotham Heights. The seat of the City Council is located in the center of the LGA in Bright, a town of about 10,000 inhabitants.

The area was explored by Europeans in 1824 already, but interesting in the gold rush times for settlers because of its high altitude location until the mid- 19th century. Alpine is surrounded by the highest mountains in Victoria, Mount Buffalo (1723 m ) in the west of the Shire, Mount Hotham (1861 m ) in the south and Mount Feathertop (1922 m ) and Mount Bogong (1986 m) to the west.

Parts of the Alpine National Park, the largest national park in Victoria, and the Mount Buffalo National Park located in Alpine Shire and are accordingly hiking, mountaineering, white water rafting and tourist attractions in the winter of skiing in the region. Mount Hotham is the highest ski resort in Australia with lift stations up to 1845 m altitude. Bright is also a popular center for paragliders.

Management
