Boroondara is located 5 to 14 km to the east of the center of Melbourne and includes 12 Districts: Ashburton, Balwyn, Balwyn North, Camberwell, Canterbury, Hawthorn, Hawthorn East, Kew, Kew East and parts of Glen Iris, Mont Albert and Surrey Hills. The western boundary of the City is the Yarra River. The seat of the City Council is located in Camberwell.

The name Boroondara means " shady dense country " in the language of the local indigenous people and points to the forest rich past of the area. 1837 the first Europeans settled there.
