Shire of Campaspe

Campaspe is located about 200 km from the capital, Melbourne on the northern border of Victoria and includes the following towns a: Echuca, Kyabram, Rochester, Rushworth, Tongala, Gunbower, Echuca Village, Strathallan, Stanhope, Bamawm, Ball Della, Whroo, Patho, Wyuna, Myola, Lancaster, Timme ring, Tennyson, Lockington, Toolleen, Torrumbarry, Nanneella, Girgarre, Corop and Colbinabbin. The seat of the City Council is located in Echuca on the border with New South Wales.

In the second half of the 19th century in particular, the city Ecucha had special strategic importance. It is not only at the confluence of three waterways ( Campaspe, Goulbourn and Murray River), but here also the largest of the rivers, the Murray River, the shortest distance from the metropolis of Melbourne. Thus, the city became the largest inland port in Australia and the railway junction. By the end of the century they had, however, lost their special status and a considerable part of the population again by economic crisis and decline in the importance of the waterways.

Today, the city is located, together with the on the other side of the border in New South Wales town of Moama a big tourism center around the Murray River and the Old Port and has, among other things, the largest fleet of paddle steamers in the world. The rest of the Shire lives mainly from agriculture. Nestlé and Heinz and the Australian company Bonlac here have larger production facilities.

Management

The Campaspe Shire Council has seven members who are elected by the residents of the six Wards. The one Councillor comes from the districts of Western, Central, Waranga, and Kyabram Deakin Ward, two come from the Echuca Ward.
