Shire of East Gippsland

East Gippsland is the eastern tip of Victoria and is about 300 to 500 km from the capital, Melbourne. The area includes the following villages: Allenvale, Bairnsdale, Benambra, Bendoc, Bruthen, Buchan, Ensay, Lakes Entrance, Mallacoota, Metung, Omeo, Orbost, Paynesville and Swifts Creek. The seat of the City Council is located in Bairnsdale in the southwest of the LGA.

The Gippsland was one of the first settlements of Europeans in Victoria, who moved here from Sydney in the south. In the mid- 30s of the 19th century, settlers established in the area between Benambra and Omeo. From 1850, then gold discoveries led in the region around Omeo to new and larger settlements. Before the arrival of the railroad benefited many towns along the route to Melbourne. Omeo is a historic gold mining town now a tourist attraction.

East Gippsland is the second largest LGA Victoria and three-quarters of the area is National Park. According prevails here with the agriculture and forestry, especially the tourism front. Attractions are the Ninety Mile Beach, the longest unbroken sandy beach of Australia ( 150 km long), and especially the Gippsland Lakes parallel to the coast west of Lakes Entrance. There, end of the 19th century an artificial, permanent access road from the Bass Strait was created for the lakes area for large vessels.

To the north, the landscape of the Shire is hilly to mountainous. From Bairnsdale to Wangaratta the 300 km Great Alpine Road, the highest paved road leads in Victoria. Guides you through the Alpine National Park, which lies at the southern end of the Great Dividing Range. At Mount Hotham the road reaches up to 1750 m altitude its highest point. On and around the mountain are also some winter ski resorts.

The East Gippsland Shire Council has eight members who are elected by the residents of the two wards. From each of these two districts, and Waratah Banksia, come four Councillor. From the circle of Councillor also the Mayor ( Mayor ) of the Council recruited.
