Fokker F27 Friendship

The Fokker F-27 Friendship is a propeller airliner of the former Dutch aircraft manufacturer Fokker.

History

Development began in the 1950s to replace the Douglas DC-3. The result was a high-wing monoplane with two Rolls- Royce Dart engines and a pressurized cabin for 28 passengers initially. The first prototype flew on 24 November 1955. The second prototype was extended in the front area by about one meter, because the plane had been found in the flight test as tail-heavy. The first production model, the F-27 -100 took 44 passengers and in 1958 was delivered to launch customer, the Irish Aer Lingus. With a more powerful engine, the F- 27-200 arose. The best-known model F 27-500 received a 1.5 m longer fuselage and seating for 52 passengers. It first flew in November 1967.

1956 Fokker closed a contract with the American company Fairchild for the production and sales of the aircraft for the North American market. The first in the U.S. built Fairchild F-27 flew on 12 April 1958.

The third series engine, an aircraft of the series F-27 -100 stands today as an exhibit in the museum Aviodrome in Lelystad, the Netherlands. The museum also owns parts of the prototype.

Before Curacao, the largest island of the Netherlands Antilles was sunk in February 2007 in the former fishing village Westpoint a decommissioned F-27 in the sea. It serves as an artificial reef and represents an attraction for divers
