John Matthew O'Connell

John Matthew O'Connell ( born August 10, 1872 in Westerly, Rhode Iceland, † December 6, 1941 ) was an American politician. Between 1933 and 1939 he represented the second electoral district of the state of Rhode Iceland in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John O'Connell attended the common schools and taught after 1892-1902 even as a teacher. Then he studied until 1905 at the Philadelphia Dental College of Dentistry. After his admission made ​​in the same year he began to practice as a dentist in this occupation in Westerly. During the First World War, he spent 16 months working as a dentist in a medical unit. After the war, he was a major in the reserve of the dental service of the U.S. Army.

Politically, O'Connell was a member of the Democratic Party. Between 1929 and 1932 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives from Rhode Iceland. In 1932 he was elected in the Second District of Rhode Iceland in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington. With this victory, he benefited from a nationwide trend in favor of the Democratic Party, the highlight of which was the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt as U.S. president. On March 4, 1933 John O'Connell joined the Congress in the footsteps of Republican Richard S. Aldrich. After two re- elections he could remain until January 3, 1939 at the Congress.
