History

Tractor Brand

1948, the company in Cento, Ferrara was founded in Italy by Ferruccio Lamborghini ( 1916-1993 ) as a manufacturing operation at that time much needed tractors. So after the Second World War useless military vehicles were converted to tractors and sold. In 1959 the production of burners and air conditioning has been extended.

Ferruccio Lamborghini and Enzo Ferrari

In 1962, Ferruccio Lamborghini, the company Automobili Lamborghini as a brand symbol he chose Murciélago, the legendary bull who survived a bullfight with 24 lance shocks on 5 October in 1879 and was pardoned then, as a symbol of strength; Also the bull was his zodiac sign. Starting this year, starting with the development of sports cars.

The decision fell to a widespread legend, after an altercation between the sports car lovers Ferruccio Lamborghini and Enzo Ferrari. Lamborghini had frequent problems with his Ferrari and complained to company president Enzo Ferrari. This rebuffed him with the remark that Lamborghini could only drive tractors correct and that no sports car. Therefore, Lamborghini, his opponent decided to prove them wrong by building a faster sports cars. According to other sources, Enzo Ferrari is said to have refused to build or to receive Ferruccio Lamborghini to an interview a sports car after Lamborghini's ideas. The veracity of these stories is, however, often doubted. Other representations assume that Ferruccio Lamborghini Enzo Ferrari has never met in person, and the sports car production resumed primarily to advertise his tractor operation.

Twelve-cylinder sports car

1963 was presented with the Lamborghini 350 GTV, the first prototype of a Lamborghini sports car. The vehicle was not in this version in series. Both the motor and the body have been modified before the beginning of the mass production. 1964, created the first copies of the model 350 GT. The output of the twelve cylinder surpassed the contemporary Ferrari models significantly. Great deal of interest Lamborghini but only with the 1966 featured Miura, which - depending on the source - with its 385 hp approached in the most powerful version of the 300-km/h-Marke. Since the Miura all models bear the names of famous Spanish fighting bull breeds or individual fighting bulls, hence the newer four-wheel drive Murciélago and the Gallardo. There were the sports cars only three exceptions - the Countach, the silhouette and the Espada. After the Countach had been completed, there was no suitable Taurus name to rename it. According to legend, now you put the car in the factory yard and called the staff together. One of the employees called at the sight of the car " Countach " ( in German: " thunder " ), and thus the car had its name. The silhouette highlighted with its differing from the fighting bull tradition model name on the formula silhouette, a discharged 1976-1980 Group 5 Championship FIA for series-production sports car; the Espada was named after the rapier of the matador. The additional designation " LP", which is included on many models in its name stands for longitudinal posterior ( = "rear longitudinal" ) and refers to the orientation of the longitudinally mounted engine.

The Countach was the first Lamborghini scissor doors, a design which was characteristic of other models.

Economic crisis and change of ownership

At the beginning of the 1970s broadened the Lamborghini model range. The four-seat Espada and the 2 2- seater Jarama were among the most expensive Italian sports car. At the same time, the company to open up with smaller and more affordable eight-cylinder models like the Urraco, which was intended to compete with the Porsche 911, new customers tried. This plan failed. The Urraco, Lamborghini in its development had invested a lot of money, could not settle in the planned quantities. Therefore, and due to the oil crisis, the company ran into financial difficulties in 1972. The tractor part Ferruccio Lamborghini sold in the Same Group (now Same Deutz- Fahr). The sports car segment changed since the 1970s, several owners: From 1972 to 1977, the Swiss businessman Georges- Henri Rossetti and René Leimer were ( 1972-1977 ) farmer. After a period of insolvency Patrick Mimran took over the company (1980 to 1987). He took the Urraco (now Jalpa ) back into production on and put the sensational SUV LM002 ago, which was based on a development contract for the U.S. Army. 1987 bought by the American major auto manufacturer Chrysler sports car manufacturer. In this era, which lasted until 1994, also falls a Formula 1 involvement Lamborghinis. From 1994 to 1998 Lamborghini belonged to the Indonesian MegaTech Group.

Since then, Lamborghini once again offering a wider range of models and shows again a large number of studies and small series vehicles. With approximately three million euro costing small series sports car Lamborghini Veneno presented at the Geneva Motor Show 2013, the currently most expensive street-legal production car in the world.
