Lapu -Lapu City is a Filipino town (Component City ) in the province of Cebu. Its former name was Opon, it was renamed in honor of the Philippine national hero Lapu -Lapu. In his honor, was built in the City of Lapu -Lapu Shrine and Maghellan.

The city occupies most of Mactan Island, which lies a kilometers south-east of the island of Cebu just once. Lapu -Lapu City is over two bridges connected to the island of Cebu, Mactan- Mandaue Bridge and the Marcelo Fernan Bridge of.

The territory of the present-day city was called before the arrival of Spanish colonists Mactan. Augustinians founded in 1730 the place Opon, this name existed until the city survey in 1961, when the place after Lapu -Lapu was renamed.
