Le Poizat

Le Poizat is a commune in the French department of Ain, in the Rhône -Alpes.

Geography

Le Poizat is located at 880 m above sea level. M., with nearly seven miles west-northwest of the town of Bellegarde -sur -Valserine (air line). The farming village extends in the Haut- Bugey, in the Jura, on a sloping north slope below the crest of the Grande Montagne, south of the deep cluse de Nantua, a Quertals by the Jura chain.

The area of ​​17,90 km2 municipal area includes a portion of the southern French Jura. The northern boundary is the cluse de Nantua. This forms a transverse valley, stretching from Nantua to the catchment area of ​​the Valserine by the chains of the high Jura. History

It is first mentioned in the 12th century Le Poizat as a basic property of the monastery Nantua. In the 13th century, the village became part of the dominion of the Thoire -Villars and came up with this in 1402 under the suzerainty of the Counts of Savoy. The Treaty of Lyon Le Poizat arrived in 1601 to France. 1827 the village was separated from Lalleyriat and collected for independent community.

Population

With 430 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Le Poizat is one of the small communities of the department of Ain. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1891 606 persons were still counted ), a population increase was recorded since the early 1980s again.
