Les Plus Beaux Villages de France

The most beautiful villages in France ( Les plus beaux villages de french France ) is a cultural tourism award in France.

The association was founded in 1982 by Charles Ceyrac, the former mayor of Collonges- la- Rouge in the Corrèze to life, to promote tourism in small rural communities with rich historic heritage. With this aim, it is distinguished from French municipalities with the label Les plus beaux villages de France. In the founding year, the mayors of 66 municipalities of the initiative joined. Currently ( 2007) listed 152 locations in 21 French regions and 66 departments in the list. Several thousand more places to apply for admission.

For quality assurance, the Association has imposed tough criteria for the selection of villages. A place that will be included in the list of the most beautiful villages in France, must not have more than 2000 residents and must have a protected zone or listed buildings.

After the French model similar initiatives emerged in 1994 in Wallonia (Les plus beaux villages de Wallonie ), in 1997 in Québec ( Les plus beaux villages du Québec ) and in 2001 in Italy (I più belli d' Italia borghi ). Since 2003, the resident of Collonges- la- Rouge Les plus beaux international umbrella organization villages de la Terre brings together the different national organizations.
