Tourtour

Tour tour is a southern French commune in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur. It lies at an altitude of 635 m, 25 km north- west of Draguignan and has 583 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011). From the association Les Plus Beaux Villages de France Tour Tour has been added to the list of the most beautiful villages in France.

Geography

The mountain village is located 25 kilometers north-west of Draguignan and about 40 kilometers from the Verdon Gorge. Due to its location on a hill, the wide gaze over the vast Provencal landscape of the central Var of Fréjus on the Mediterranean to the Montagne Sainte- Victoire in the West, the place is decorated with the label " village in the sky of Provence " (village dans le ciel de Provence).

History

Finds from the Neolithic period to document the prehistoric colonization of the area. In the Iron Age were in Florièye Valley Oppidien five and a sentry. Until the 10th century it was known as Valuègne -Saint- Domnin. Count William I of Provence hit in 973 at the Battle of Tour Tour the Saracens. The present village was built platoons from the 11th century to the medieval castle around which still exists today. Tour tour is a popular resort today.
