Roquebrune-sur-Argens

Roquebrune -sur- Argens ( Provençal Rocabruna d' Argenç or Roco Bruno d' Argens ) is a commune with 12,308 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

The municipality consists of the villages of La Bouverie, Roquebrune -sur -Argens and Les Issambres and extends over a length of 28 km from the Esterel over the Argenstal away to the northeast slopes of the Massif des Maures along to the Cote d' Azur. With a total area of ​​106.10 km ², it is one of the largest surface area municipalities of the department.

The old village of Roquebrune is picturesquely situated on a cliff above the river valley.

Les Issambres is the coastal town of Roquebrune. He was known before the Second World War through his now no longer existing theater and its shaded by pine-covered beaches. The politician Franz Josef Strauss family had been here since the 60s, a holiday home.

La Bouverie, the third district is located, surrounded by vineyards north of Argenstales.

Roquebrune -sur -Argens borders the municipalities of Fréjus, Saint- Raphaël, Le Muy and Sainte -Maxime.

History

The municipality of Roquebrune -sur -Argens can look back on a thousand years of history. In the 11th century it was built under the Latin name Rocca Bruna, pointing out the rock on which it was built.

In the year 973 sales William I of Provence, the Saracens, who invaded in the last century in the region. From then on, Roquebrune could the entire Middle Ages safely spend in isolation in the protection of its walls and survived even the epidemics like the plague. In the 15th century the fortifications were expanded in times of economic prosperity.

With the construction of Argensbrücke in 1829, the city was connected to the cross-connection to Italy.
